Since then, he has been passionate about blending traditional styles of music from around the world with the classic Western symphonic orchestra. Over the past two years, he has been working on several projects revolving around video game music, such as his current "Maia Suite", as well as pieces for full symphonic orchestra, including his "Symphony No. 1 in E♭ - Mulan". Most recently, he was commissioned to write a short overture for the Northampton Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra of his hometown, as a part of their 125th anniversary celebration and to be premiered at the Northampton Derngate on 16th June 2019.
Alga Mau was born in Barnstaple and grew up in Northampton. Now residing in Southampton, he mainly writes music for symphony orchestra and wind orchestra.
A pianist and clarinettist, he has had much experience playing in ensembles of various sizes, taking part in many groups including the Northamptonshire County Clarinet Choir, to the Southampton University Symphony Orchestra.
He first started writing for solo piano in 2010, after which he eventually began to explore works for larger ensembles. Taking great influence from composers for film and video games from Asia, his first large-scale work "Spirit" was shortlisted and performed at the Adrian Boult Hall in Birmingham as part of Music for Youth's New Music Stage 2015.
The year after, his next work for wind orchestra "Khvarenah: The City of Light" won the Abingdon Concert Band composition competition in 2016, in which it is now published and for sale by TradeWinds (Concert Band Series).
